Karate

Every week, when we go to Kumon, JL is enamored by the kiddos at the karate studio next door.  The sign on the door says ages 6 and up but I always see younger kiddos walking in.  I knew JL was too young from watching the ages of kiddos walk out but he wasnt giving up the thought of Karate.  He had a particularly good session at Kumon one day so I told him we could go watch the Karate kids.  He was so excited.  I ended up knowing the lady at the front desk and she encouraged us to 'try out' for Karate.  The youngest they have is 3.5 years which is the youngest they take as well.  This reminded me of Kumon when they told us he had to be three to go there, but he actually started at 2.  He gets determined and decides he wants something and by gosh, he makes it happen.

Sooooo, we went and tried out for Karate and he did great!  He earned the white belt which basically gets you into karate for a trial month.  They get to see what your child can do for a month and guide you from there.  After a month, we may have to come back when he is older but I think JL will enjoy it even if it is for a bit.
Getting the white belt

This is JL listening to the teacher give him instructions on the obstacle course.  The hardest part was at the end, he made JL stare at a letter 's' for about 20 seconds without wavering attention away from the 's'.  While JL was staring at the 's' the instructor was jumping, yelling, whistling, leaving and entering the room and required JL to stare at the 's' the whole time.  It was hard for even me to do.....but JL did it!  JL was able to do the obstacle course with no asthma problems too!

Watching and 'focusing' on his teacher
